Chapter 30

Amonth has passed since Kitty and I started sparring. The leaves have changed colors and started falling from the trees. The beginning of the winter winds blows through the park and over the city. And currently, Vicky is sitting in my living room, watching the news with me.

“Why do you always watch the news?” Vicky asks.

“Why not? It’s how I learn when something big is going on. Especially since you don’t share anything with me.”

“I’m not allowed to.” Rolling her eyes, she kicks up her feet on my coffee table. “How was training today with Kitty?”

Rubbing my eyes, I let out a happy groan. Kitty and I have been getting up earlier and sparring for longer over the weekends. Today is one of those days, and even though it’s only eleven, I’ve been up for eight hours already.

“She’s an endless supply of energy,” I joke.

Snickering, Vicky doesn’t look sorrowful towards me. “I’m just glad she found someone that can stand up to her.”

“She’s far faster than me.” Thinking back to this morning’s practice, I recall how she blurred around me to land hits on my ribs and head. I swear my ears are still ringing.

“But if you land a hit, she goes flying,” Vicky counters.

“True,” I chuckle. “I’m getting better at predicting her moves and countering her.”

“About time!” Zack jokes as he comes out of his bedroom. Falling onto the couch, he kicks his feet up.

Vicky regards him for a moment. “I can’t believe you moved in with Zee.”

“Why not? We’re both in the same class, and we get along,” Zack says.

The smell of cooking meat fills the air as sizzling and popping echoes from the kitchen. Mia has currently stepped out for a minute, and I need to flip her lunch. Getting up, I move to the kitchen and quickly flip the steaks and chicken. The bacon wrapped pork chops, and stir the boiling potatoes.

Why is she making so much food?

Returning to the living room, I fall into my usual chair. “Kitty should be here soon,” I comment.

Vicky nods. “It’s one of her rare days off. She’s not going to miss out on Mia’s cooking.”

Smiling, I watch the front door open, and Mia come back in with a confused expression.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“Why is there a scratching post in the hall?”

Vicky starts laughing, while Zack shakes his head. Perking up, I say, “I figured with Kitty coming over so often, that I would make a special toy for her.”

Vicky glances at Zack. “I still can’t believe you know his secret.”

Smirking, Zack says, “It wasn’t that hard to figure out once you looked at the clues.”

Mia interrupts Vicky before she can respond. “It stretches from floor to ceiling! Why did you make it so big?!”

“She’s a tall cat.”

Rolling her eyes, Mia moves into the kitchen. “Thank you for flipping my meat.” Pulling out two bottles of wine from her purse, she sets them on the counter.

“Is that why you went out?” I ask.

Nodding, she pulls the cork out of the first bottle.
